BBC pundit Garth Crooks backtracks over comments made about Man Utd's Scott McTominay

Garth Crooks has admitted he “misjudged” Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

McTominay netted his second goal of the season, which was United’s 2,000th strike in the Premier League, as the Red Devils swatted Norwich aside with a 3-1 victory at Carrow Road – with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial also getting on the scoresheet.

BBC pundit Crooks has put Scotland international McTominay into his Team of the Week following his impressive performance against the Canaries on Sunday.

It was the latest in a series of impressive performances from McTominay and Crooks has admitted he has changed his mind about his star quality.

“I’ve watched this lad a lot in recent weeks and couldn’t work out why Solskjaer keeps playing him,” Crooks said. “He runs about a lot and is certainly not afraid to put his foot in – but a Manchester United player?

“Against Liverpool he was excellent and after his performance against Norwich he finds himself in my TOTW.

“He’s also bright enough not to get involved in taking penalties for Manchester United. I think I might have misjudged him.”

McTominay was happy with United overall performance against Norwich and has begged his teammates to continue their up turn in form.

“It’s about pushing forward now and not getting carried away as a group and keeping that humbleness to show the same intent as we have in the last two games against Liverpool and Norwich in the Premier League and that attitude to be humble enough to go and get after your opponents.

Despite the three points and three goals, Rashford wants United to be more ruthless in front of goal.

“I think the one thing we can improve on is making more clear-cut opportunities for each other,” said Rashford. “For me, that’s the next step.

“We’re creating and making each other half-chances, but, as forwards, the easier the goals you can get, the better.

“We want to be able to just square it past the goalkeeper and tap it in.

“We’ve been working hard and I think, if we keep that up, it’ll become easier for us.

“I think we’re just talking to each other as we’re playing and it makes it simpler for you on the ball.

“If we can give information as we pass the ball it just makes it that bit more simple. That’s the next step for us.”
