Ms McGovern was hosting the Convention of the North in Rotherham when the remark was made, shortly after Mr Johnson had departed. She was referencing comments made by the Prime Minister about his predecessor David Cameron. Ms McGovern said: “I just want to point out I am a girly swot and I’m proud of it.
“Let’s see who’s in the job the longest.”
Ms McGovern later tweeted: “At a non BBC event I was hosting today, I made a light hearted remark after the Prime Minister’s speech.
“Sorry that this caused offence to some.
“That was absolutely not my intention.”
Previously redacted Cabinet papers revealed Mr Johnson noted: “The whole September session is a rigmarole introduced by girly swot Cameron to show the public that MPs are earning their crust.”
The note was written on August 16 and is believed to made in response to a senior aide arguing for MPs to be sent away for up to five weeks.
Mr Johnson would end up going through with the procedure referred to as proroguing.
It is believed Ms McGovern is employed on a freelance basis by the BBC and thus is free to take up outside work.

He replied: “Would you mind, I’m very happy to get back to Parliament very soon.”
The Prime Minister also insisted: “We’ve lost about four days of Parliament sitting time.
“There is ample time for Parliament to consider not just Brexit but all kinds of things.”
Saturday marks his 52nd day in office.
The shortest time in office for a British Prime Minister is 119 days by Tory George Canning who died in office.
Mr Canning’s successor The Viscount Goodrich resigned after 114 days, the shortest spell of a Prime Minister who did not die in office.
The Viscount was unable to hold together a Canningite-Whig coalition and was replaced by The Duke of Wellington.
Mr Johnson is set to meet Jean-Claude Juncker on Monday.
He will also meet Xavier Bettel, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg.
