THE BBC was facing embarrassment last night for voicing criticism of Newsnight host Emily Maitlis.
After some viewers complained about her chairing of the controversial Tory leadership debate, bosses wrote online that “her style may not be to everyone’s taste”.
But the offending comment was hastily deleted after it was spotted by The Sun.
A BBC News spokesman said last night: “An earlier draft of this response was published in error. Emily’s a superb broadcaster.”
Miss Maitlis hosted live show Our Next Prime Minister last week in which Boris Johnson and rivals talked over each other and were put on the spot by an anti-Semitic Imam and a former Labour candidate.
Yesterday afternoon the BBC complaints website published its first response to complaints from some viewers who “felt that Emily Maitlis was a poor choice of chairperson and failed to control the debate”.
The response said the show was not meant to be a typical debate show and insisted that Miss Maitlis had allowed all the candidates to put their views across.
It then went on: “We appreciate that her style may not be to everyone’s taste, but we consider that she did a good job during this programme.”
Within minutes of the comment being spotted by The Sun and raised with the BBC press office, however, it was deleted.
The later version of the sentence simply stated: “We consider that she did a good job during this programme.”
Miss Maitlis was not available for comment.
The Newsnight host has been reported to BBC bosses for allegedly spreading anti-Brexit propaganda, ex-culture secretary John Whittingdale revealed.
And she was also slammed after letting her sleeping pet pooch take up a train seat earlier this week.
