Bayern Munich complete €80m transfer of France left-back Lucas Hernandez

Bayern Munich have swooped for Atletico Madrid left-back Lucas Hernandez.

The France defender has signed a five-year deal with Bayern and will officially complete his move on July 1.

Bayern are believed to have forked out a staggering €80m (£68m) on Hernandez, 23, who was part of France’s World Cup winning squad last summer.

Hernandez has been out of action with a serious knee problem and Bayern have suggested he needs surgery and will not return before the end of the season.

“Today is a very important day in my football career. Bayern Munich is one of the best clubs in Europe and the world,” Hernandez said.

“I am proud to be able to fight for all titles for Bayern in the future. I would like to thank Atletico, the management, the coaches, my team-mates and the fans for a wonderful twelve years.

“Atletico will always be a part of me. Now I’m happy that I’m taking the next step at Bayern.”

Hernandez joined Atletico in 2007 and made his first-team debut in 2014.

Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic added: “Lucas can be used both in central defense and on the left defense. In addition, Lucas will continue our tradition of outstanding French players and strengthen our team.

The German champions have also agreed a deal to sign Hernandez’s international teammate Benjamin Pavard.

The France full-back will arrive at the Allianz Arena from Stuttgart at the end of the season.

Bayern are currently top of the Bundesliga after winning their last six matches although Borussia Dortmund are tied on 60 points.

They were however dumped out of the Champions League by Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool at the last-16 stage earlier this month.
