Batman’s butler Alfred is synonymous with the DC Comics franchise and now he’s getting his own show.

Prequel series Pennyworth is due for release in July and the first full trailer has just dropped.

The highly anticipated show will see Jack Bannon from The Imitation Game lead the cast as Alfred Pennyworth, before he was ever employed by Bruce Wayne.

Previous iterations of the character have been played by Michael Caine, most famously, as well as Jeremy Irons and Michael Gough.

Pennyworth a former British SAS soldier in his 20s, who forms a security company and goes to work with a young billionaire Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge), who’s not yet Bruce’s father, in 1960s London.

Canon told Deadline that Pennyworth delivers a ‘very different world’ to Gotham and described it as ‘unhinged’.

Other cast members include Paloma Faith, Jason Flemyng, Ryan Fletcher, Hainsley Lloyd Bennett, Emma Paetz and Polly Walker.

Paloma revealed that playing notorious villain Bet Sykes saw her ‘threatening to kill neighbour’s dog’ while in character.

The promo, which can be watched above hints at a darkly comic spy drama that will appeal to non-Batman fans too.

The series comes just as beloved Batman franchise Gotham finished up for good in April.

So there’s plenty more Batman canon to keep fans happy.

Pennyworth is released on July 28 on EPIX.
