Former Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger believes a move to Old Trafford would benefit Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller.

The 30-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams after being frozen out by Niko Kovac at the Allianz Arena.

Louis van Gaal was desperate to sign the Germany forward in 2015 but United failed with a £75m move for the striker.

Schweinsteiger moved to United earlier that summer and he’s confessed that Van Gaal would often ask him about Muller and his availability.

And the German, who recently announced his retirement, believes a move to United could revive Muller’s career.

‘Van Gaal really wanted him, always asked me, “What’s your friend Thomas doing?” He would have done us good on United back then,’ said Schweinsteiger.

‘But Thomas was a bit younger, he did not want to leave Munich. Maybe that has changed in the meantime

‘His situation is different to mine back then. I was playing every game, then van Gaal contacted me, I wanted to try something new.

‘Thomas is often on the bench lately, a change of air can do him good at the end of his career. He still has great quality’

Bayern are unwilling to listen to offers to Muller and the forward may need to hand in a transfer request to force through an exit from Bavaria.

The Bundesliga giants were beaten 5-1 by Frankfurt on Saturday and the pressure on Kovac’s position is increasing with every week.

Muller is likely to delay making a decision on any departure until Kovac’s future becomes clearer.
