The baseball player’s father Leo told ESPN: ‘[Police] called to tell me that David is injured and that they took him to a medical centre, but they did not tell me how he is or exactly where he was transferred.’

According to CNN, a spokesperson for the Dominican National Police has confirmed that a bullet went ‘through Ortiz’s stomach’.

The report alleges that the shooter, a motorcyclist, approached Ortiz directly while he was sitting down.

Representatives for David Ortiz have been contacted by Metro.co.uk for comment.

Ortiz is a father of three. He has a teenage daughter Alexandra and a son named D’Angelo with Tiffany Ortiz, his wife of 17 years. He also has a daughter named Jessica from a previous relationship.

The baseball player, who made his Major League Baseball debut in 1997, is best known for winning three World Series with the Red Sox, before retiring in 2016.

He currently works alongside Alex Rodriguez, Kevin Burkhardt and Frank Thomas as a MLB studio analyst for Fox Sports.
