Singing icon Barbra Streisand has opened up about her friendship with Prince Charles, revealing he once sent her flowers from his garden before he met Princess Diana.

In July, Prince Charles dubbed himself a ‘great admirer’ of Barbra’s as he chose her famous song Don’t Rain on My Parade as one of his favourite tracks when he appeared on a Hospital Broadcasting Association programme.

As reported in The Times, he recalled the ‘special memories’ of his first meeting with Barbra, 79, and lavished her with praise as ‘dazzling’ and ‘effervescent’.

Now Barbra has added her own memories to the mix of her first encounter with the Prince, 72, when she was recording at Warner Bros in 1974 and he was a 26-year-old serving in the Royal Navy.

Calling it ‘so sweet’, she revealed that Prince Charles had asked to meet her and then came to the recording studio.

Talking to Ross King for Lorraine, she remembered: ‘I offered him a sip of tea and I thought, “They didn’t have to test me for poison or something? No.”’

Acknowledging that they ‘became friends’, the star also remembered how she ‘loved spending some time at Highgrove for a weekend fundraiser’ and had gone through his gardens.

The Prince obviously noted Barbra’s interest in his horticulture as the Funny Girl star then shared an anecdote about receiving some fresh-cut flowers when she was staying in a London hotel at a later date.

‘I said, “Who sent me that?”, and she [Barbra’s assistant] said, “A fan called Charles.” And I said, “Really? Let me see the note” – and there was his seal. And they weren’t like from a florist because they were from his gardens and it’s a different look.’

The songstress laughed over her assistant, who ‘just mistook it for a fan’, which she thought was ‘so funny’.

At the time, Prince Charles was one of the most eligible bachelors in the world, having yet to meet his first wife, Princess Diana.

Yentl star Barbra added: ‘I had a very funny line on stage when he came to see [my] show [in Hyde Park in 2019]. I said, “You know, if I played my cards right, I could have wound up being the first Jewish princess!”’
