In Barbara’s book All of Me: An Extraordinary Life, originally published in 2000, Barbara spoke of how their age gap didn’t bother them.

Barbara said: “We did discuss the age gap, but agreed it would be more of a problem for other people than for us.”

In 2014, Barbara was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, but it wasn’t until four years later that Scott spoke out publicly of her diagnosis.

At the time Scott exclusively told The Sun in 2018: “She suddenly has no recollection of our history.

Today, Scott has revealed he has placed Barbara in full-time care amid her Alzheimer’s getting worse.

Talking to The Sun, Scott spoke of how it has been an “emotional rollercoaster” for him.

He told the publication: “I feel I’m on an emotional rollercoaster. I walk around, trying to keep busy, then burst into tears. It feels like a bereavement.

“It’s always been my biggest fear, that one day I would have to take her somewhere and she’d be thinking, ‘Why would he do this to me?’

“That fear has become a reality. It’s something I never wanted.”

He went on to explain how he wanted the best for Barbara.

Scott added: “Deep down, I know it’s for the best, but Barbara doesn’t yet.

“I’m still trying to envisage when it becomes her normality, and she will settle and be happy.

“But right now she still occasionally gets cross with me and wants to come home.

“But that’s the illness and, however painful it is for me to accept it, I don’t regret the decision. I know this needed to happen for Barbara’s wellbeing.”
