Baptiste: Tchéky Karyo speaks out on character’s ending ‘Already on other projects’

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Tchéky talked about what was in store for the popular French detective on Baptiste. Although only the second series, Baptiste came as a spin-off of its original programme The Missing, so the current episodes make the fourth instalment of Julien Baptiste’s journey. The character has attracted a huge fanbase, but with the show coming to an end, what’s next for Tchéky?

Talking about his reaction to discovering this series would be the last, Tchéky, 67, said: “I was surprised that it’s the last one.

“So what should I say? If Baptiste continue to be alive or not, he will still be alive for a while because he was so welcomed by the Anglo Saxon world.

“And he was sold over 180 countries. I’ve been in this series for a while. And I’m going to miss them.

“So I guess I would have to be a detective for him again. I will let you know – I’m already on other projects and production.”

Series two sees British Ambassador Emma Chambers (played by Fiona Shaw), whose family disappears whilst on holiday in the Hungarian mountains.

Julien immerses himself into Emma’s world, committed to finding her husband and two sons.

But things take a more sinister turn, and Julien is forced to navigate a Hungarian police force he doesn’t trust.

The story encompasses two timelines, showing very different worlds but with the same characters.

In the first episode of the new series, British Ambassador Emma Chambers (played by Fiona Shaw) is left baffled after her family disappears whilst on holiday in the Hungarian mountains.

In one timeline, the events in Hungary are just unfolding, and a grieving Baptiste is looking for a case to solve as a means of escaping his own problems.

In the future timeline, an unkempt Baptiste is sporting a huge beard, drinking heavily and hiding away, while Emma is in a wheelchair having been left unable to walk.

The body of Emma’s husband is found by Baptiste in the episode, but viewers are left not yet knowing what happened to Emma’s teenage sons.

The heartbroken ambassador finds footage on her husband’s phone of her sons being taken away as they plead an anonymous man to “stop.”

The series has been described by the writers as the most ambitious one yet.

Explaining this, Tchéky said: “It’s subject to dealing with the reality of our society.

“And when I read it I thought it was really bold also, because they are questioning the society. How do we navigate this world that we are going through today?

“And it focuses on how extremism expresses itself – how normal people can deal with that.”

He continued: “And this is the back of the main story. This political colour.

“How different people struggle to cope with their minority, the narrow minded people – that’s why the series brings a lot of feelings and thoughts that suddenly exploded and that’s what I really enjoy.

“But the writers – the brothers [Jack and Harry Williams] they don’t forget to have humour and irony.”

Baptiste is available to watch on BBC iPlayer, and episodes air on Sundays at 9pm on BBC One.
