Bake Off 2019 winner: Who won The Great British Bake Off 2019?

The Great British Bake Off is over for another year, with the 2019 winner being crowned tonight (Tuesday, October 29) on Channel 4. The nail-biting finale saw the Steph, Alice and David go head to head over the course of three challenges but only one could be crowned the winner. Here’s a recap of who won the series and how the finale of The Great British Bake Off 2019 unfolded.

Who won The Great British Bake Off 2019?

The three finalists in The Great British Bake Off 2019 were Steph Blackwell, Alice Fevronia and David Atherton.

However, only one baker could be crowned the winner and take home the treasured Bake Off cake stand.

After 10 weeks and 30 challenges, David Atherton was crowned the winner of The Great British Bake Off 2019.

After his win, David exclaimed “Oh my goodness,” and even got a hug from Paul Hollywood who told him he had “smashed it.”

With tears in his eyes, he said: “For nine years I have been daydreaming about being on Bake Off.

“Week on week, other people were stronger. I was always the underdog just managing to get through.”

He added: “Just getting to the final was a win for me, so this is just unreal.”

Paul called him the “underdog” of the competition and fellow judge Prue Leith called him an “extraordinary baker.”

David’s win came as quite a shock as he had never been crowned star baker during the competition.

On the other hand, Alice had been crowned star baker twice and Steph an impressive four times.

For David, slow and steady won the race as he blew judges Paul and Prue away with his cheese-themed picnic showstopper.

The Signature challenge

For the signature challenge, the finalists had to bake an impressive chocolate cake.

David went for an Armagnac based chocolate cake and Alice went for a pear infused sponge.

Steph went for a more classic approach, baking a Black Forest Gateau.

David’s bake was criticised for the strength of alcohol in his cake but praised for his presentation.

Prue called Alice’s cake “clumsy” on the presentation front and Paul criticised the lack of chocolate taste.

However, Prue disagreed, saying it was the perfect balance of chocolate and pear.

Steph’s chocolate cake was praised for its “old fashioned style” and Paul called the cake “delicious.”

Technical challenge

For the technical challenge, the bakers were asked to bake six twice-baked stilton souffle’s.

All three bakers struggled with the technical challenge the most, with Steph crying over her failed bake.

Out of the three bakers, David excelled with Prue calling his souffle “delicious.”

In the end, Steph came in third place, Alice in second and David in first.

The Showstopper

For the showstopper challenge, the bakers had to make a picnic for the judges.

The picnic had to be themed and include bakes with a biscuit base, one bread item and one cake dish.

The centrepiece had to be an illusion cake and Alice opted to make an orange and cardamon ice cream cones.

Sadly, things went terribly wrong for Alice who was left upset by how her showstopper had turned out.

For once, David did not overload his bakes with strong flavours and he ended up blowing the judges Paul and Prue away with his picnic and cheese centrepiece.

Paul was so impressed by David’s showstopper, he even described it as “exceptional”.
