Bake Off 2019: Who left The Great British Bake Off tonight?

In tonight’s (Tuesday, October 15) instalment of Bake Off, the five remaining contestants were faced with pastry week. Steph, Alice, David, Rosie and Henry were hoping to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith to make it through to next week’s (Tuesday, October 22) semi-final. Sadly, only one could be crowned star baker and only four could be sent through, meaning one contestant was sent home.

Who left the Great British Bake Off tonight?

Five bakers became four after Henry became the ninth contestant to leave GBBO 2019.

Speaking about Henry’s showstopper, Prue said she was “disappointed” and Paul said he had “improved” but the other bakers were “better.”

Henry’s exit was bittersweet and said goodbye laughing, exclaiming “it’s been a pleasure darling.”

On a more positive note, Steph was crowned Star Baker, despite her struggling with the technical challenge earlier in the episode.

Throughout the episode Henry failed to outshine his fellow bakers during the Signature, Technical and Showstopper challenges.

Pastry week began with the bakers taking on the Signature challenge.

The bakers were tasked with baking a savoury Tart ta tatin, a French tart covered in puff pastry with a savoury filling.

Some of the bakers went for goats cheese as part of their filling whilst others chose carrots, onions, tomatoes, potatoes and a range of other vegetables.

From the get-go, the bakers expressed their distaste for baking pastry, so they all challenges were going to be tough.

Sue and Paul were the most impressed with Henry and Steph’s tart.

However, Alice, Rosie and David left the judges a little disappointed.

For the technical round, the bakers had to create a multilayered Moroccan pastry pie, which they had not got the change to practice.

They had to make 12 thin sheets of pastry, wrapped around a pie, with very vague instructions.

All of the bakers found the technical round the most challenging, with most of their pasties not holding the pie together.

Henry’s pie was voted in fifth place and Alice in third.

David came in first place and was praised for the pie’s strong flavour and structure.

The final decision on who would leave tonight came down to the showstopper challenge.

For the showstopper, the bakers had to make a “stunning, vertical pie.”

The structure had to have three pies stacked on top of each other and each additional pie had to be supported by just pastry in a vertical structure.

Alice made a tree trunk and a treehouse and David made a fish pie, based on his home town of Whitby.

Steph revisited her childhood with her curried Chickpea and Potato Carousel shaped pie.

Rosie made a 9-pie tall Rapunzel Tower with curried vegetables, roast veg and camembert.

Henry made a sweet and savoury pie that will be shaped like a Chandelier.

All of the contestants were praised for their showstopper presentations but sadly for Henry, his show stopping pastry chandelier was not enough.

The Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4
