BUY SECOND-HAND, RENT OR HIT THE SALES: From sports gear to musical instruments, going second- hand can save serious dosh. It’s always worth searching the eBay or Gumtree websites. In case your child does not want to stick with a club after their first try, you can also just rent certain items from websites like fatllama.com.
Also make the most of the end-of-summer sales. Look for the “clearance” tab. I found an Artengo kids’ tennis racket for £6.99 at decathlon.co.uk, while on the Sports Direct website I saw a Smash junior Slazenger racket for £9.99, down from £23.99.

TRIAL RUNS AND GROUP DISCOUNTS: Club joining fees can be steep so ask if there is a free trial where your child can see if they like it before you part with your money. There may be early-bird offers, too. Or get a gang of your child’s friends together and ask if the club offers a group rate.
FREE ONLINE TUTORIALS: Music lessons are pricey — often around £30 an hour. But the internet is full of free tutorials. Once you have found a second-hand instrument, tune in to YouTube for free teaching videos. I searched for “guitar for beginners” and found lots.

FREE ACTIVITIES: Check your local council’s website, and with your child’s school, to see what is planned. Nothing available? Try arranging activities with other parents. If you have the space and time, maybe you can run crafting sessions at each other’s homes.
