BAFTA Game Awards 2020: Outer Wilds walks away with three big wins

The BAFTA Game Awards saw both Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium steal the show, as Hideo Kojima received his Fellowship.

Despite its cancellation due to the coronavirus, the BAFTA Game Awards were still able to be held last night, albeit under different circumstances.

Rather than a live showing, the ceremony was livestreamed via BAFTA’s official social media platforms, including YouTube, Twitter, and Twitch, and hosted by comedian/gaming fan Dara Ó Briain, making this his ninth time hosting the event.

While it may not have been the most ideal of circumstances, that didn’t dilute some of the victories of the night, as a couple of games managed to score some massive wins, particularly Outer Wilds (not to be confused with the completely unrelated The Outer Worlds).

The adventure/puzzle title about a solar system stuck in a time-loop walked away with no less than three awards for Best Game, Game Design, and Original Property.

Its Best Game win is particularly impressive, as its competition included high-profile games such as Control and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the latter of which won Game of the Year at 2019’s Game Awards.

Disco Elysium also cleaned up, taking home the awards for Debut Game, Narrative, and Music, beating out Death Stranding in two of those categories.

Death Stranding didn’t leave empty-handed, though, as it still won in the new Technical Achievement category, and director, writer, and designer Hideo Kojima was given his promised Fellowship, the highest honour one can receive from the BAFTAs.

Meanwhile, the EE Mobile Game of the year (the only award to be voted on by the general public) went to Call Of Duty: Mobile.
