Bachelor star Sarah Mae Amey is 'still in so much pain' after breast surgery

Former Bachelor star Sarah Mae Amey is recovering after having her botched breast implants removed last week.

The Gold Coast florist, who appeared on Tim Robards’ season in 2013, had discovered last month that her left implant had ‘ruptured’ more than a decade after undergoing a breast augmentation in Thailand.

After several weeks of silence, she revealed on Instagram that she was exhausted and ‘in so much pain’ a week after her corrective surgery.

On Thursday, Bachelor star Sarah-Mae Amey told her fans on Instagram Stories that she is ‘still in so much pain’ a week on from having breast explant surgery after an ‘extensive, massive rupture’ was found in her implants. Sarah-Mae Amey pictured before surgery

She said: ‘I’ve got nothing in me. I’m still in so much pain. I’m just really emotional now. I just wasn’t expecting the pain and recovery to be this bad.’

Sarah Mae Amey explained that she was comforting herself by watching YouTube videos of other women with similar experiences of breast implant complications.

Her latest surgery involved removing the ruptured implant, followed by a breast lift and removing then reattaching the nipples so they do not sit too low on the chest.

‘If you choose to have this done also, be prepared, it’s f***ing hectic. This combined with a really bad rupture clean out,’ she added.

‘I was not prepared for this pain extent at all!’

Recovering: She said of her pain post-surgery, 'I've got nothing in me. I'm still in so much pain. I'm just really emotional now. I just wasn't expecting the pain and recovery to be this bad'

What is breast implant illness?

Breast implant illness (BII) is a term used by women who have breast implants and who self-identify and describe a variety of symptoms they feel are directly connected to their saline or silicone, textured or smooth breast implants.

The symptoms include (but not limited to) fatigue, chest pain, hair loss, headaches, chills, photosensitivity, chronic pain, rash, body odor, anxiety, brain fog, sleep disturbance, depression, neurologic issues and hormonal issues.

However, there is no definitive epidemiological evidence to support a direct link between breast implants and any specific disease process.

Sarah Mae also shared a special thank you to her partner, Matt Flugge, and her cousin Cara for assisting her while in recovery.

‘Thank you to my darlings Cara and Matt for showering me, washing my hair, cooking for me,’ she said.

She also advised women facing similar corrective surgery that they ‘will need a lot of assistance. Lean on those around you.’

What happens when breast implants rupture?

All types of breast implants have the potential to tear. This is known as a rupture.

When a saline implant ruptures (or its valve fails) the saline quickly leaks out and is absorbed by the body, leaving the breast looking deflated in a matter of days.

It is less obvious to identify when a silicone implant ruptures, as the gel takes much longer to ooze out of the rupture than saline.

The silicone is not absorbed, and can therefore spread to other parts of the body.

The body may react to the silicone implant rupture by forming scar tissue, sometimes causing a distortion of the breast’s shape.

Sarah’s advice comes after she revealed last month that doctors had identified an ‘extensive, massive rupture’ in her left implant.

She later admitted she was struggling to cope with the fact that she will be left with extensive scarring following the explant procedure.

‘I had my first hysterical cry yesterday about what they will look like afterwards with the scars,’ she wrote on Instagram Stories.

‘But then I pulled myself together and remembered they are just boobs. They don’t define me.’

Sarah Mae said that she’d decided not to get new implants because it wasn’t ‘worth the risk’ of having another rupture. (She did end up having a breast lift, however.)

Sarah Mae believes she has been suffering from breast implant illness, a term used by women who self-identify symptoms they feel are directly connected to breast implants, since her initial surgery in Thailand.

‘I am connecting all of the dots and feeling like this could potentially be the cause of so many of my health issues because my body is so inflamed,’ she said last month, adding that she started having ‘strange health issues’ after getting implants at 19.

She cited a variety of health issues over the years, including blood clots, dizzy spells, endometriosis, an appendix removal, food intolerances, breathing issues and inflammation of the rib cage.

Inaction: Sarah Mae also urged her fans to get their breast implants checked regularly after experiencing stabbing pain in her left breast, which resulted in the dangerous rupture. She warned others not to get breast implants in Thailand

Sarah Mae also urged her fans to get their breast implants checked regularly.

‘I was experiencing stabbing pains in my left boob quite a while ago and I just left it,’ she admitted.

As a result of her inaction, Sarah Mae’s rupture became ‘quite dangerous’.

‘Don’t get your boobs done in Thailand, basically,’ she concluded. ‘I thought it was a great idea as a young and naive 19-year-old.’
