Bachelor: Matt Agnew discusses his mental health and social media after splitting up with Chelsie

‘I didn’t want to deal with the comments’: Former Bachelor Matt Agnew reveals he struggled to cope with the social media backlash after splitting up with Chelsie McLeod

Former Bachelor Matt Agnew has broken his silence about his life after splitting up with Chelsie McLeod.

The astrophysicist, 32, revealed to author and comedian Rosie Waterland, on her podcast Just The Gist, that he was so anxious about making the split announcement on Instagram that he asked a friend to post it for him.

‘I was dreading it. I put together my words and they were something I gave a lot of thought to to make sure I was conveying my feelings correctly,’ he said of the post.

‘I actually got a friend to post it because I couldn’t do it myself,’ he admitted.

The scientist revealed that his friend also handled his Instagram for a long time after the break-up announcement was made back in December.

Matt said: ‘I didn’t want to deal with comments, I didn’t want to deal with DMs and all that, and I’m really glad I did.’

‘Everyone says don’t read it (the comments), and you can do it 99 per cent of the time, but you have that one percent, that one moment of weakness and you read something and you completely capitulate.’

He said that he leaned on his friends to help him manage his Instagram ‘until things settle down and I could return to living a more normal life.’

Elsewhere in the podcast, Matt said he was devastated by the split, saying: ‘that’s life and that’s dating, and relationships sometimes they don’t work out but it’s an experience.

‘You do try and find whatever positive things you can find from it but the experience certainly helped me grow as a person,’ he added.
