Baby who suffered brain bleed is being hailed a 'miracle' after doctors gave him hours to live

An eight-month-old boy is being hailed as a ‘miracle’ for surviving a brain bleed after doctors gave him just hours to live.

Michelle Coyle, of New Orleans, Louisiana, unexpectedly went into labor in March 2019 and gave birth to her son, Carson Joseph.

The newborn was a bluish color and, after examining him, doctors determined he had severe neurological damage and a brain bleed that likely meant he wouldn’t survive through the night.

Carson’s parents said a prayer and a stranger visited in the middle of the night to do the same, reported WWL-TV.

Over the next few days, the baby was able to breathe on his own, the bleed healed and there were no signs of any brain damage.

His medical team couldn’t explain the recovery, but his parents say it’s a ‘miracle’ and it’s now being examined by the Catholic Church.

Michelle and her husband, Brandon, had been trying to start a family since getting married in 2015.

After two miscarriages, the couple was overjoyed when they fell pregnant last year and named their son after one of his grandfathers.

Michelle had no complications until she went into labor weeks earlier than she and her doctors expected, on Mardi Gras.

She pushed for hours, but the baby barely moved, reported WWL-TV.

After a vacuum-assisted delivery, which uses a pump to guide the baby out of the birth canal, Carson was born at 10.12pm weighing six pounds.

However, the joy of giving birth soon fell way to concern.

‘He was pretty lifeless,’ Michelle told WWL-TV.

‘His feet were purple and blue,’ Brandon added.

Carson was rushed to the NICU. Doctors first told the couple he would be fine but, upon further examination, they said he had suffered an infant intracranial hemorrhage: a brain bleed.

This can be caused by oxygen deprivation, birth trauma or the misuse of tools like a vacuum extractor.

Doctors said Carson would he have moderate to severe neurological damage and have developmental disabilities.

But things got even more worse. The baby ballooned from six to eight pounds, and his and ears were swollen shut, reported WWL-TV.

‘My immediate reaction was to ask if my baby was dying and she said: “Unfortunately it does seem to be looking that way, to please call your immediate family,”‘ Michelle said.

The couple didn’t do much aside from informing their families and praying. A stranger, Judge Dennis Waldron, arrived with a crucifix, and placed it on the baby.

The next morning, Carson began returning to a normal color, he was able to breathe on his own and began eating.

An MRI also showed no signs of neurological damage.

After 15 days in the hospital, Carson was discharged. Follow-up lab work and tests show that he is healthy.

It seems highly improbable that a baby could go from having just hours to live to completely healed. But his parents say it’s because of prayer.

The judge who visited Carson was a volunteer with a center named after Father Francis Xavier Seelos, a New Oreleans priest expected to be recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church, reported WWL-TV.

The crucifix the judge had placed on the baby was used by Father Seelos during his ministry in the 1800s.

Whether or not the Catholic Church or Rome recognizes Carson’s recovery as a miracle, his parents say it is one.
