If it wasn’t crazy enough to find out that Baby Shark has now become YouTube’s most viewed video ever, then news that it was released four years ago will definitely leave your minds blown.
Four years ago?! Anyone else feeling like that flew by?
Baby Shark for those of you that don’t know (seriously? How can you not?) is a nursery rhyme created by Korean children’s educational brand Pinkfong, which creates sing-a-long videos and dances for kids.
It dropped on YouTube in 2016 and instantly went viral on social media, thanks to the Baby Shark challenge which saw people everywhere recreating the video’s easy moves.
Fast forward to 2020 and Baby Shark is still going strong, with the official video having racked up over 7.04billion views on YouTube, making it the most viewed YouTube video ever.
Yup, it’s sailed past Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito video released in 2017, which originally held the record and currently stands at 7.03billion views.
Baby Shark, which is just over one minute long (1m 21secs to be exact), is know for its catchy ‘doo doo doo’ hook that, granted, is a bit like marmite and you either love or hate.
Following its release, Baby Shark became a global phenomenon and even found itself rivalling Drake, as parents re-created the In My Feelings challenge to the educational tune.
Remember the trend of people dancing outside of their cars to the Drake track? Well, the Baby Shark version had parents dressing up as sharks and recreating the dance while their cars moved alongside them.
Baby Shark not only reached number six in the UK singles charts, but even has Kylie Jenner as one of its biggest fans, and has become a brand within its own right, bringing out merch and hosting live tours.
The song hasn’t come without its controversy, though, as reports revealed in October that prison guards had tortured inmates by playing Baby Shark on repeat.
USA Today reports that inmates were forced to stand with their hands cuffed and secured to a wall behind them while the song was played repeatedly as a ‘means of punishment’.
The detention officers involved in the incident at Oklahoma County Jail were charged for subjecting the inmates to ‘inhumane’ discipline and ‘undue emotional stress’.
