Axiom Verge 2 and Golf Story 2 announced in latest Indie World Nintendo Direct

The Switch has a host of new indie games lined up for next year, including Streets Of Rage 2 and The Escapists spin-off The Survivalists.

At the moment we know virtually nothing about Nintendo’s plans for next year, with the only big name game scheduled at the moment being Animal Crossing: New Horizons on 20 March – and that’s only because it got delayed.

But thanks to the latest Indie World livestream we do know about a bunch of new indie games heading to the system, even if most of them don’t have firm release dates yet.

It’s only 20 minutes long, so we advise just watching the whole thing, but the obvious highlights are Golf Story 2 and Axiom Verge 2.

Actually, it’s not called Golf Story 2, but Sports Story, because, as the name implies, you get to play lots of other sports, including tennis, volleyball, football, and baseball. And, because developer Sidebar Games are Aussies, we’re willing to bet cricket as well.

Golf Story is one of the most popular indie games on the Switch and Sports Story will be out mid 2020 as a Nintendo exclusive.

There was less info on Axiom Verge 2, but Tom Happ appeared to thank fans for their support and promise an autumn 2020 release.

The short amount of game footage looked a notable step-up from the first game, and closer to a SNES game than the original’s NES look. The first game was one of the best Metroidvanias (leaning heavily on the Metroid side of things) of recent years, although there was no indication that the sequel is an exclusive.

Other announcements of note include a first half of 2020 release date for Streets Of Rage 4, plus a reveal for returning character Adam Hunter from the first game.

Supersmash from Digital Continue sounded fun too, as it lets you create random mash-ups of famous retro genres, such as a platformer crossed with a Japanese role-player; it’s out in May 2020.

Dreamscaper also seemed to have some similar ideas, creating procedurally-generated dream worlds for you to explore, that are influenced by whoever you talk to during the day.

There were lots of other games too, with The Talos Principle: Deluxe Edition and Dauntless launching straight after the livestream, but the other big name reveal was The Escapists spin-off The Survivalists.

Stuck on a desert island training monkey butlers, it reminded us of a co-op version of Konami’s old Stranded Kids/Lost In Blue games, which we were always fans of.

It’s an impressive line-up but just as encouraging is the fact that Nintendo bothers to promote indie games at all, even going to the trouble of having many of the developers present the games themselves.
