Avicii's family reveal epic tribute plans to superstar DJ

The superstar DJ died last year after taking his own life in his hotel in Muscat, Oman.

Avicii, whose real name was Tim Bergling, was just 28 years old.

In a new statement, his family said: “Tim wanted to make a difference — starting a foundation in his name is our way to honour his memory and continue to act in his spirit.”

According to Rolling Stone, The Avicii Foundation will raise money and awareness for a string of causes focused around mental health and suicide prevention.

They add that the foundation is also hoping to raise awareness for a broader range of issues including climate change and natural conservation.

While it is thought the foundation will be in Avicii’s home country of Sweden, the plan is for the movement to be global.

Confirming the tragic news of the musician’s death last year, reps released a statement saying: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii.

“He was found dead in Muscat, Oman, this Friday afternoon local time, April 20.

“The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”

Avicii struggled with the pressures of global fame and international tours.

In his Netflix documentary True Stories, the DJ was seen begging management not to book him for any more shows as he thought he was going to die.

One of his last songs was his chart-topping collaboration with Rita Ora – Lonely Together.

The track appears on both his final EP and Rita’s Phoenix album.

Speaking about the late star on stage shortly after his death, Rita said: “I had the honour of collaborating with someone who changed my life and he was a really good friend of mine.

“I heard some DJs playing some of his music earlier, and I haven’t sang his song that we did together ever since he passed away, until today.

“It’s going to be very hard for me to sing this next song.”
