Scarlett Johansson has spoken out about the difficulties a film like Black Widow faces in a male-dominated industry.

The upcoming Marvel film, which is due for release in 2021, stars Scarlett as the Avenger Black Widow, aka Natasha Romanoff.

Given that the majority of the MCU focuses on the male superheroes, Scarlett has refused to ‘candy-coat’ the challenges the film faces in the industry.

She told Marie Claire: ‘I don’t want to candy-coat anything because it’s a challenge in a male-dominated industry to tell a woman’s story from the perspective of a female director and focus on the heart of something that is inherently female.’

Revealing why she chose to take on the role, Scarlett explained: ‘I look for women who I feel I can relate to on some level, that I have empathy for.

‘That’s a bit complicated, obviously, because you can have empathy for people in different ways, and for different reasons.

‘But if I can empathise with a character, no matter what their moral compass is, then that’s important to me.’

Scarlett’s comments come after Black Panther star Letitia Wright also suggested an all-female Avengers movie might not be far off as Marvel bosses are keen to get one in the works.

Letitia told Yahoo Entertainment: ‘I don’t think we have to fight for it. [Executive VP of production] Victoria Alonso is very strong about spearheading it, alongside Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios president]. It’s only a matter of time before they do it.’

The Black Widow standalone movie has been in the works since 2004 and was due for release in May 2020, but like many movies it ended up being pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Disney announced in early April that the film would be arriving in cinemas on November 6, 2020, but by September it had been moved back further, with its current release date pegged for May 7, 2021.

Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh cover the Winter issue of Marie Claire, which is on newsstands on November 17.
