Avengers: Endgame has only been in cinemas a few days and it’s already broken a number of records, including making $1.209bn (£0.79bn) at the international box office, making it the biggest global opening in film history and the first film ever to surpass the one billion mark in its debut.

The previous record was held by Infinity War, at $640million (£495.53 million) without China in the opening.

The Marvel powerhouse is absolutely smashing the competition out of the park and has been setting lots of records in a short space of time.

Domestically the film opened with a record $156.7 million (£121.33), including the Thursday previews and beat out previous record holders Star Wars: The Force Awakens, $119 million in 2015 (£92.14 million) and its first part, Avengers: Infinity War $106 million in 2018 (£82.07 million).

Not only are the likes of Captain America and Iron Man breaking records domestically, but they’re also doing it internationally; Endgame broke another record by grossing an estimated $487 million (£377.06 million) at the end of its first Friday, flying past Fast & Furious 8, $443 million in 2017 (£343 million), Time reports.

In China, Endgame has the highest grossing three day start ever, and on Saturday, Disney said that it estimates a three-day domestic total of $310-$340 million, which is projected to beat the current record holder Infinity War, $258 million (£199.76 million).

So many records broken, so many more to break.

It comes as little surprise that viewers are flocking to the cinemas to watch the nearly three-hour long feature as it is much more than a sequel.

The dense film is the culmination of over a decade’s worth of work and 22 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That’s a lot of superhero movies.

It seeks not only to tie up the monumental plot left gaping at the end of Infinity War, but also eleven years’ worth of storytelling.

A tall order for Marvel, given that the MCU as we know it has ceased to exit with the conclusion of the film.

Fans of Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man and Chris Evans’ Captain America are keen to find out how their character arcs come to an end, and those who already know are bursting at the seams from trying not to spoil it for others.

With the Cap, Black Widow, Hulk, Thor & co getting their own endings – of a sort – lots of Marvel fans wonder how this cultural space, occupied for so long by the late Stan Lee’s creation, will be filled.
