The Avengers: Endgame box office is poised to be absolutely unprecedented. Fresh off a record-breaking $60 million from Thursday night preview showings, Disney is now cautiously projecting an opening day gross of $140+ million and an opening weekend gross in the range of $300 million, both of which are insane.
Avengers: Infinity War currently holds the title for the biggest opening weekend of all time at $257.7 million, so if Endgame cracks $300 million, that’s not just breaking the record, that’s shattering it. As for the opening day total, Star Wars: The Force Awakens holds the record at $119.1 million, so if Endgame hits $140 million or over, that’s yet another record shattered.
While insiders predicted Avengers: Endgame box office would be huge, there was caution over the film’s three-hour runtime (which means fewer showtimes). It appears that’s not proving to be a detractor for audiences in the slightest. Endgame broke records for the number of theaters it’s showing in, and it appears fans all across the globe—die-hard and casual alike—are coming together to celebrate this conclusion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Indeed, unprecedented box office goes hand-in-hand with an unprecedented movie event. 2008’s Iron Man toyed with the notion of interconnected universes, and over the ensuing decade Marvel Studios has brought various combinations of characters together while expanding their genre reach with individual films (Thor: Ragnarok is a straight-up comedy, Spider-Man: Homecoming is a teen high school movie, etc.). But whether you’ve seen all previous 21 films or you just tune in to catch your favorite character’s standalone movie, Avengers: Endgame has proven alluring to all. And especially for those who got onboard the train early and may have missed a few standalone films here and there, the notion of seeing the OG Avengers back in action for one last stand is hard to resist.
There’s also the fear of spoilers drawing folks to the theater this weekend in droves. Marvel Studios has literally kept the plot of Endgame a secret, so the sooner folks see the movie, the less chance they have of having the film’s many surprises ruined.
