Shaun Hampson was voted out of the Contenders’ tribe and back into the Champions’ team on Sunday’s episode of Australian Survivor. 

And following the ‘tribe swap’, the 31-year-old spoke to Fitzy & Wippa on Monday about the how the gruelling conditions in Fiji affected his body during filming.

Shaun recalled how he struggled to adapt physically and mentally to the lack of food and sleep.

‘You starve yourself for a couple of weeks on rice and beans… it just shreds away,’ Shaun said of the dramatic weight loss he experienced. 

He added that the lack of food ‘really takes it out of you’ after the fourth day. 

In addition to hunger pangs, he felt the effects of his diminished energy levels on his  blood pressure and heart rate.

Shaun also revealed that prolonged hunger resulted in him having bizarre dreams at night, in which he was taunted by food that he couldn’t eat or taste.

The retired AFL star added that he found it especially difficult to sleep in the camp, and claims he only had 10 hours of sleep in the first week.  

The unpredictable weather conditions on the island made the privations even harder to cope with, he said.

He said the whole camp was shivering during Tribal Council once, when they were forced to stand in the rain for hours. 

Shaun explained that it was sheer adrenaline that got him through the tougher moments in his Australian Survivor journey.
