Australian Fashion and Beauty Influencer Wengie is nominated as the World's Best YouTuber


Australia social media star Wendy ‘Wengie’ Ayche is nominated for YouTuber of the Year at the 12th Annual Shorty Awards

She’s the Chinese-Australian internet sensation from Sydney who has amassed 14 million subscribers on YouTube.

And on Thursday, it was announced that Wendy ‘Wengie’ Ayche, 34, had been nominated for YouTuber of the Year at the 12th Annual Shorty Awards.

The ceremony is considered the Oscars of social media and recognises the best content creators across platforms like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and more.

The former accountant turned her back on the corporate world to start a lucrative million dollar career sharing her advice on beauty, fashion, life hacks and DIY tutorials on YouTube back in 2010.

Wengie is up against some tough competition in her category, including beauty gurus Jeffree Star and Nikkie Tutorials, transgender philosopher ContraPoints, and stunt performer Mr Beast.

Wengie, who now splits her time between Sydney and Los Angeles, previously told 60 Minutes that she was in the YouTube business for creativity, not for fame.

‘I love what I do creatively, I’m not in it for the fame. The fame is a bonus. I don’t see fame as the thing I want,’ she said.

‘A fan comes up to me and says “you’ve made a difference in my life”, that to me is the best moment I could take from this whole experience.’

The nomination caps off a bumper 12 months for Wengie.  

The internet sensation released a line of toy products last year which were sold in more then 1800 Target stores in the US.

The line, called Whimsical By Wengie, included body art, a glitter lava lamp and a hair kit.

The launch comes just after Wengie’s started a career as a pop star.

Last year, she released eight singles which sky rocketed to the top of the charts in Asia.

She is also the voice of the 4th Powerpuff Girl on Cartoon Network.

Wengie has over 14 million YouTube subscriber and over 1.3 billion views on her YouTube channel.

Michelle Obama previously won a Shorty Award in 2013 for being a GIF star in a hula-hooping video which was designed to get kids interested in exercise. 

The 2020 award winners will be revealed in May at a ceremony held in New York.
