Audrey Hepburn’s son unveils her heartache and his sadness that he couldn't help

Audrey Hepburn has gone down in history for her iconic roles and striking appearance.

But her son Sean Hepburn Ferrer, 60, has now shared that she hid her secret heartache from the world behind her perfect smile.

The son of the Breakfast At Tiffany’s star has recalled his mother emotionally telling him “with bloodshot eyes” how his Italian stepdad, Andrea Dotti, had been cheating on her with other women and how he was unable to help her at the time as he was only a child.

Sean told The Sun: “I knew there was difficulty. My mum sat me down with bloodshot eyes, told me what was going on and asked me what I thought.

“I was a kid. I did not know how to help her.”

He also detailed how his dad – Audrey’s first husband, Mel Ferrer – was hard work, and claims Mel was “on the verge of being a rageaholic”, adding that his parents’ union became strained due to them working together.

Sean says: “They worked and travelled every day together. In the years they were together they probably spent as many hours with each other as those who were together for 35. That takes a toll.”

He added: “I think he had to fight for everything. He was difficult. He was neurotic in certain respects — about perfection, on the verge of being a rageaholic, brooding. We are brought together by the great feelings and it is the little stuff that breaks us apart.”

Sean’s comments come after a new documentary named Audrey – who died in 1993 – was released at the end of last month that has delved into the hardships Audrey faced.

The Hollywood icon died in 1993

The official synopsis for the documentary reads: “Audrey Hepburn won her first Academy Award at the age of 24 and went on to become one of the world’s greatest cultural icons… But who was the real Audrey Hepburn? Malnourished as a child, abandoned by her father and growing up under Nazi occupation in Holland, Hepburn faced a life-long battle with the traumas of her past, which thwarted her dreams of becoming a ballet dancer, and cast a shadow over her personal life.

“Yet she found inner peace using her superstardom for good as a global ambassador for UNICEF and bringing her life full circle; first a victim of war, then a source of relief to millions.”
