ATP roundup: Top seed Tsitsipas retires in Zhuhai

No. 1 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece retired due to illness prior to the third set on Thursday against France’s Adrian Mannarino at the Zhuhai Championships in China.

Tsitsipas won the first set 6-3 and dropped the second 7-5 before withdrawing. Mannarino moves on to the quarterfinals to face Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur, a 7-6 (3), 6-2 winner over South Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon.

Italy’s Andreas Seppi saved five match points in the deciding set tiebreak and eliminated Chinese wild card Zhizhen Zhang 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (8) in two hours and 44 minutes. That set up a meeting with No. 2 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, who defeated fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar 7-5, 7-5.

No. 7 seed Alex de Minaur of Australia reached the quarterfinals with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Andy Murray of Great Britain. His opponent will be Croatia’s Borna Coric, a 6-3, 6-3 winner against Di Wu of China.

Chengdu Open

Bulgaria’s Egor Gerasimov upset top-seeded Jon Isner 6-7 (11), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) to reach the quarterfinals in Chengdu, China.

In a match that featured only two break points and a combined 59 aces (35 by Isner), Gerasimov won 87 percent of his first-service points. He next faces No. 8 seed Denis Shapovalov of Canada, who edged American qualifier Bradley Klahn 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Portugal’s Joao Sousa knocked out second-seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4. Spain’s Pablo Carrena Busta ousted No. 3 seed Benoit Paire of France 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and Chile’s Cristian Garin defeated Spain’s Fernando Verdasco by the same score. Fourth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria beat Britain’s Daniel Evans 7-5, 7-5. South Africa’s Lloyd Harris eliminated fifth-seeded Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-3.
