Atletico Madrid 'end transfer interest' in Man Utd and Chelsea target Edinson Cavani

Atletico Madrid’s proposed move for Edinson Cavani appears to be dead in the water.

The PSG striker appeared to be on his way to the Spanish capital, with his current deal expiring at the end of the month.

Chelsea and Manchester United have both been keeping tabs on the Uruguayan but have so far been put off by his price tag and wage demands.

But they could revive their interest in Cavani at the end of the season when is a free agent after Atletico’s deal broke down.

AS reports a deal was agreed between the two clubs, and Atletico and Cavani, but agent demands scuppered the transfer.

It is claimed Cavani’s representatives asked for a hefty commission on the deal, as much as Atletico were willing to pay as their transfer fee.

Atletico are said to be furious with the demands and could now end their interest completely, rather than revisit the situation in the summer.

Chelsea are in need of a striker and Frank Lampard remains a big fan but was not ready to splash out the sums needed.

There is also a striker shortage at Old Trafford but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is pursuing other short-term options.

Chelsea could make a last-ditch attempt to complete a deal for Napoli striker Dries Mertens.

An approach has already been rejected by the Serie A side but they could be persuaded at the right price, with Mertens also a free agent at the end of the season.
