And many Whitehall officials and quango chiefs are paid almost twice as much as the Cabinet ministers they serve.

The figures were seized on by MPs angry over an “orchestrated campaign” to discredit Home Secretary Priti Patel.

Her permanent secretary Sir Philip Rutnam quit last week, accusing her of bullying.

But her allies pointed out civil servants were handsomely paid — with generous pensions and often knighthoods — to carry out, not resist, the wishes of an elected government.

Sir Philip, 54, was on a package of nearly £195,000 when he walked out, almost £50,000 more than the salary of his political boss, who receives £146,973.

A Tory source said: “The British people will be appalled to learn that not only are the establishment trying to frustrate what the people want, but they are being paid quite so much for the privilege.”

Ms Patel also earns less than the permanent secretaries in the two other departments where she was accused of bullying.

Civil service chiefs insist they would earn more if they were in charge of a private company.

But ex-Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said: “Some of them couldn’t run a bath.”

In an article for The Sun on Sunday, he says senior officials are waging a campaign to discredit the Home Secretary.
