At last! Corbyn finally takes blame in first post-election meeting with furious Labour MPs

The Labour leader issued a grovelling apology that finally saw him admit he was ultimately to blame for the party finishing on Friday morning with the worst election result since before the start of the Second World War. He said: “I am very sorry for the result for which I take responsibility. Despite our best efforts, I believe this election was ultimately about Brexit.”

Referring to Boris Johnson he added: “The Tory campaign amplified by most of the media managed to persuade many that only Johnson could ‘get Brexit done’.”

Ally Claudia Webbe bizarrely said this evening: “We have lots to celebrate.”

She was immediately heckled.

He was reported to have sounded “worn out and defeated”.

Today, Mr Johnson unveiled his new MPs to the House of Commons which erupted with a mighty roar.

As new MPs were sworn in on Tuesday afternoon, the atmosphere between the Tory and Labour party leaders was extremely tense.

The SNP’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford was also in the chamber on Tuesday, after claiming the victory for his party in Scotland in the election, and suggesting it was now evidence to allow a fresh independence vote.

Mr Johnson was backed at the despatch box by 364 Tory MPs now that Labour is left with just 203.

Writing in the Sunday Mirror, Mr Corbyn has said that he “wanted to unite the country that I love but I’m sorry we came up short and I take my responsibility for it”.

But, this is the first time Mr Corbyn stood in front of his own MPs to speak about the disastrous election result.
