This time, as weird and hard and scary as it is for adults, the kids are so happy to have our undivided attention. When I’m watching the news nonstop, I get a lot of anxiety. It really is a blessing to spend this much time with them. I do face masks every day. I’ve never done more masks in my life. The girls do it with me, so it has become a bonding thing. Honor is a preteen, so she gets clogged pores and stuff, so she uses the Honest Beauty charcoal detox mask; Haven and I use the Prime + Perfect Mask. We also do nails; we made body butter hand lotion and scrubs. Many things went wrong.
We’ve also been doing some painting. Honor thought we should paint rainbows. We make up games. We’ve been watching classic movies, The Jewel of the Nile, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club. Otherwise they’re just going to be binge-watching 30-second TikTok videos.
Around the house, I do a 10-minute face. It just makes me feel better looking at my reflection. That’s kind of my jam — just something quick and easy. If I’m going to really try, I’ll do my hair. But usually I just let it air-dry. I’m using the new Honest Beauty tinted moisturizer that has protection from the blue light of screens and devices. Then a blush, mascara, and a lip balm.
I incorporated a give-back into my business model from the very beginning. A percentage of sales from day one has always gone to families in need. We work with an organisation called Baby2Baby. Diapers is the number one item people need, for families living in poverty. With COVID-19, we’ve stepped up those efforts. We’ve also put a donate button on honest.com. People have really been loving our lavender bubble bath. As well as the beauty products and the masks, I do the lavender bath. Everybody does it in the family. I feel like 80 percent of the time someone climbs in with me.
I think the pandemic has brought a lot more compassion and empathy to our own family, in the way we interact with each other, but also how we think about others. It has spurred a lot of really interesting conversations with my kids about personal responsibility and the cause and effect of your choices. We’ve all learned that lesson, and I think that will stick with them forever.
