Jack Grealish has fuelled speculation he could be set to join Manchester United, ‘liking’ a fan’s desperate plea on Twitter for him to complete a move to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.

The Aston Villa captain has long been linked with United and is understood to be on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s shortlist of big-name transfer targets, with the Norwegian in the market for attacking reinforcements after yet another year without silverware in the north west.

Reports this week suggest several members of United’s dressing room have been blown away by Grealish’s performances in the Premier League this season and view the gifted 25-year-old as an ‘appealing signing’.

However, the Red Devils will likely have to beat off competition from ‘noisy neighbours’ Manchester City to get their man, who are prepared to make the midfielder the first ever £100million player in English football.

Villa are in no hurry to part with Grealish given his vital importance to the team’s fortunes and will not consider selling their prized possession for anything less than a new British transfer record.

And while Grealish has remained tight-lipped and loyal to Villa until now, the England international dropped a big hint that he could be keen on leaving his boyhood club for the Theatre of Dreams on Friday night.

Reacting to a highlights reel of a precocious Wayne Rooney at Euro 2004, Grealish tweeted: ‘Nah this is just crazy [crying laughing emoji] 18 you know at the euros [shocked face emoji].’

Grealish then ‘liked’ a reply from a United supporter which read: ‘Please join United [praying hands emoji].’

The Villa skipper was out of action for three with a shin injury towards the end of the season but helped his side to an 11th-placed finish in the Premier League, contributing six goals and 10 assists.

Earlier this week, Paul Scholes urged United bring in a quality ‘creative midfield player’ and suggested one of Grealish or Jadon Sancho would fit the bill perfectly for his former club.

‘I think we need someone who is a creative midfield player. Grealish or Sancho, one of them would be ideal,’ the legendary ex-United and England midfielder told the Webby and O’Neill YouTube channel.

‘It would be great to have a left-footed centre back but I don’t think it’s needed, I don’t think we are desperate for that.

‘I would like to see a centre-half come in next to Maguire. I think Lindelof is doing alright, I just think alright isn’t good enough to win a league.

‘Marquinhos from PSG, I think he’s be a brilliant centre-half next to Maguire but again you’re talking about a lot of money.’
