Stewards raced on to the pitch and  police moved to Leicester’s end to prevent Foxes fans also pouring on to the pitch — as well as keeping Villa fans away from them.

Trezeguet’s dramatic stoppage-time winner sent Villa through to the final of the League Cup for the first time in a decade.

As Villa fans celebrated, two smoke canisters were hurled on to the pitch and plumes of purple and claret swirled around the players before stewards rushed to remove them.

Villa can expect to be fined for those breaches of security.

But worse was to follow as their fans sprinted on to the pitch from all sections at full-time.

Stewards frantically pulled Villa and Leicester players through the crowds to the safety of the tunnel.

Although many fans, some with children on their shoulders, were only there to celebrate — several even consoled Leicester’s Caglar Soyuncu and shook his hand —  others were not so well behaved.

Some goaded Leicester players and Maddison appeared to get involved with Villa fans who were taunting him.

The FA are sure to take a dim view as the safety of players was compromised — and Villa will face a nervous wait to discover if they will be punished.
