Aston Villa and Newcastle 'in transfer race' for ex-Arsenal ace Emmanuel Adebayor

Former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor is at the centre of a surprise transfer battle as he targets a return to the Premier League in the January window.

Aston Villa, Newcastle and Brighton are all reportedly interested in the 35-year-old striker, who also played for Manchester City and Tottenham.

Adebayor is a free agent after last month leaving Turkish club Kayserispor, for whom he scored two goals in eight appearances.

The Togo striker scored 46 goals in 104 Premier League appearances for Arsenal between 2006 and 2009.

And now he wants one last shot at the English top flight, according to The Sun.

Adebayor also has a couple of personal targets to aim for, the publication claims.

A source is quoted saying: “He has 97 goals and is keen to reach 100 Premier League goals.

“He also wants to pass his close friend Didier Drogba’s record of 104 goals in the Premier League to become the all-time top African top scorer in the Premier League.”

Villa, Newcastle and Brighton could all use the extra firepower Adebayor would bring as the three clubs bid to steer clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone.

The Saudi Arabian wealth fund, which is poised with a £340million bid, have been warned there are two other parties talking to representatives of Newcastle United owner and Sports Direct tycoon Ashley.

Ashley has returned to the UK from America with the chance to sell one of his biggest assets now firmly on the agenda.

Advanced interest from the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, along with billionaire British brother David and Simon Reuben, has not been denied by Newcastle or Ashley, but a deal has yet to be signed off.
