Aston Villa 1-0 Everton LIVE: Wesley scores first Premier League goal as Villa Park erupts

Aston Villa 1-0 Everton – LIVE

  • Wesley opens Premier League account with calm finish
  • Tyrone Mings and Bjorn Engels both fine after head scares
  • Aston Villa look to get off the mark in the Premier League
  • Everton can go top of the table with a win at Villa Park

77: Schneiderlin skies an effort over the bar after a sustained period of (sticky) Toffees pressure – soon after Richarlison comes off for Walcott.

70: As you may have guessed, it’s been a very uneventful 10 minutes. Sorry about that. Everton are pushing forward as much as they can in a 4-4-2 formation but Villa are organised well at the back. Iwobi just had a chance in the area but snatched at it and the deflection flies into Heaton’s hands.

61: SUBS (Everton) – Iwobi and Kean on for Sigurdsson and Bernard. Iwobi making his Toffees bow.

59: Penalty shout for Villa as Mings heads into what seems an outstretched arm by an Everton man. VAR and Oliver are not interested.

55: Mina risest highest for an attacking corner but heads well over after Sigurdsson orchestrated a promising Toffees move.

52: YELLOW – Calvert-Lewin slides into a challenge on Wesley and does not get the ball, warranting a caution.

50: Jota has been impressive throughout the match with his guile and poise on the ball and again finds himself at the fulcrum of a counter attack which, unfortunately for Villa, fizzles out as they near the penalty area.

46: We are back in full flow here.

HALF-TIME: Aston Villa 1-0 Everton

45: Three minutes of added time due to the injury stoppages.

44: Handbags from Wesley and Mina as the former confronts his South American friend, who muscled him into a poor cross.

40: Coleman has been a livewire down the right flank and Taylor needs more help from Trezeguet to try to silence him, but that isn’t forthcoming. Another foray from the Irishman almost bears fruit but Villa clear/.

36: Everton opening up slightly as they chase the game more and Villa look dangerous on the counter attack with their quick, one-touch passing.

32: BIG CHANCE! Calvert-Lewin could have drawn Everton level as the striker latches onto Coleman’s brilliant chipped pass back into the penalty area. The young Englishman times his run onto it and opens his foot to place it in but finds a Villa body.

25: Villa bopping the ball around nicely now and Everton have retreated, not opting for an energetic high press. Wesley has another chance from a similar position from the right of the box but his shot is blocked.

22: GOAL – WESLEY! Against the run of play, Villa break on the counter and Jota slides a neat ball in between the left side of the defence to find Wesley. The striker takes it calmly, slotting across Pickford.

15: Everton look threatening and move the ball forward brilliantly with one-touch football as they gallop down the left-wing. It culminates with Bernard cutting inside and floating a cross to the far post in hope of Richarlison meeting it, but he overhits it for a goal-kick.

12: Superb block and sliding block from Mings after a neat Everton corner routine almost finds the net – turns out the sliding challenge came from an offside shot but the Englishman looks fine following his warm-up wince and head knock.

08; Injury concern as Engels dips his head low to cushion the ball back to Heaton, only for centre-back partner Mings to hoof the ball in the air. He doesn’t quite catch the Belgian but the ball seems to glance off him as it was catapulted into the air.

06: PENALTY SHOUT – Richarlison goes down under pressure from Grealish but referee Michael Oliver waves away the pleads for a spot-kick. VAR agrees with the official.

05: YELLOW – Guilbert earns the game’s first caution as he stops a promising Everton attack.

03: Everton start brightly and Bernard slips a neat ball down the left side from which Digne earns a corner. It comes to nothing but a cross from the ensuing phase of play sees Mings receive a bash to the head from his own keeper, Heaton. He looks fine and returns to the action after shortly leaving the field.

01: The home side get us underway at Villa Park.

KICK-OFF

7.55pm: Mings emerged from the dressing room after what we believe is a groin problem. Could be something worth monitoring as he did not sprint after going down in the warm-up. Almost go-time here. Lock in for some fun.

7.50pm: Dean Smith feels Villa have been worth more than no points in their opening two games but must eradicate silly mistakes if they are to get off the mark.

“I thought we were very close last week,” he told Jamie Carragher before the game. “We made two silly errors within the first 10-15 minutes and it cost us two goals.

“Second half I thought we were goo and put Bournemouth under an awful lot of pressure and probably deserved a point from the game.

“In the first game at Tottenham we held on for an hour. I didn’t think we played great in the last 20-30 minutes of that game, but it just shows that we’ve got a good team.”

7.40pm: Mings returns to the dressing room early after going down in the warm-up. It appears to be an issue with one of his legs but the defender initially returns to his feet and trains before heading down the tunnel before his team-mates.

No such worries for Everton, who can go top with a win. Marco Silva is vying for an improved showing this campaign after finishing eighth in 2018/19 but believes top-six talk is too early.

“The goal is to do better than last season and we must,” he told Sky Sports. “It doesn’t make sense thinking otherwise.

“We finished in a very good spot, playing well, but it’s too early to talk about the top six. We must prove on the pitch every week that we’re in a good moment.”

7.30pm: Have the pallet for some stats? If so, you’re in luck. If not, stay with us, see it through.

  • Villa’s only win in their 11 most recent league matches against Everton was 3-2 at home in May 2015
  • They have lost 14 of their past 15 Premier League games, drawing the other one against Newcastle; it’s the second-longest winless run in the club’s top-flight history, four behind their unwanted record
  • Jack Grealish has lost a record 20 Premier League games in a row
  • Everton’s tally of 12 Premier League clean sheets in 2019 is second only to Manchester City’s 13.
  • Seamus Coleman and Gylfi Sigurdsson are both making their of 250th Premier League appearance

7.15pm: Two changes for Villa then, as they Guilbert and Jota come in for their first starts of the campaign, with Elmohamody and El Ghazi making way.

Dean Smith opts to keep faith in new striker Wesley after the forward’s attitude was criticised by Paul Ince earlier in the week.

Everton, on the other hand, make just the one change from their win over Watford with Schneiderlin replacing new signing Gbamin.

Everton will be clad in all blue tonight to avoid a kit clash – so apologies to any jersey purists out there.

GOOD EVENING

Welcome to live coverage of the most-played league fixture in the history of English football – Aston Villa vs Everton. But this game won’t be old and boring, it’ll be new and shiny and exciting – so stay along with Express Sport for the ride.

Villa have looked competent and organised in their opening two games but came out the wrong side in losses to Tottenham (3-1) and Bournemouth (1-2). The atmosphere was electric for the side’s first top-flight game since 2016 on the weekend against Bournemouth and another raucous atmosphere is expected tonight.

Everton, meanwhile, headed into the campaign with worries over their defence but they have kicked off with two clean sheets. Marco Silva’s men are looking a more coherent unit if a little profligate in front of goal.

Keep tuned, kids, because team news is coming soon.
