Asteroid alert: NASA tracks a space rock taller than Big Ben on 17,000mph 'close approach'

The European Space Agency (ESA) said: “NEOs could potentially hit our planet and, depending on their size, produce considerable damage.

“While the chance of a large object hitting Earth is very small, it would produce a great deal of destruction.

“NEOs thus merit active detection and tracking efforts.”

Asteroid UK6 is a fairly large object, measuring an estimated 157.5ft to 360.8ft (48m to 110m) across.

At the upper end of NASA’s size estimate, the space rock stands taller than Big Ben’s Elizabeth Tower in Westminster, London.

At the lower end of the size estimate, the asteroid is comparable in height to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France.
