Andy Robertson equalled the record for most assists by a defender in a Premier League season during Liverpool’s comfortable win over Huddersfield – and has two games left to break it.
The Merseysiders were ahead after just 15 seconds on Friday night at Anfield as Naby Keita, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah all got on the score sheet in a dominant performance.
Robertson set up the second and fifth of those goals in another swashbuckling display from the Scot, taking his tally of assists for the season to 11.
His whipped cross into the box in the first half landed perfectly on the head of Mane to glance home, while it was a low driven ball late in the match that saw Salah score the Reds’ fifth and final goal.
Incredibly, no defender in Premier League history has ever recorded more assists in a season than Robertson has this year.
His 11 assists draws him level with, ironically, two former Everton defenders, Leighton Baines (in the 2010-11 season) and Andy Hinchliffe (in the 1994-95 season).
Teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold is just two assists behind Robertson, having laid on nine himself this season – and notching another in the win over Huddersfield – and the Scot admits they have pushed each other all season.
Asked about his assists haul, he told Sky Sports after the game: ‘Yeah, look, delighted. He got one as well. I’m just keeping in front! But it’s all about trying to help the team, and that’s why we did it [had a competition to get the most assists], it pushes both of us.
‘I think it proves it by the numbers this season. But it’s friendly banter and hopefully it’s stayed that way the whole way through. Whoever wins it now it’s going to be incredible and good numbers from both of us.’
