Assassin’s Creed Valhalla customisation options detailed, both genders canon

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be bringing back Odyssey’s character customisation for both genders of its new protagonist.

In case you somehow missed it, the newest Assassin’s Creed game was finally unveiled yesterday, after months and months of rumours.

And while said rumours may have got the title wrong (it was suspected of being called Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok), the Viking-era setting was correctly predicted.

We didn’t get to see any gameplay footage during the reveal, but some basic features were confirmed, such as that you will be able to once again choose either a male or female protagonist, just like in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

In an interview with Eurogamer, lead producer Julien Laferrière was able to share some more concrete details about the game as a whole, including the protagonist, named Eivor.

Laferrière didn’t talk about Eivor too much, obviously to avoid spoilers, but aside from the fact that both genders will share the same name (unlike Odyssey), he did confirm that Odyssey’s character customisation options would return.

Aside from gear that will change how the character looks, you will also be able to apply different kinds of war paint, tattoos, and even beards (no word on whether female Eivor can have a beard, though). You’ll also get your own Viking longboat to customise.

Eivor can dual-wield weapons as well, and shields will be returning after fans complained about their absence in Odyssey.

But the most important question in need of answering is ‘Which Eivor is canon?’ While Odyssey featured two different characters, Ubisoft stated that the female lead, Kassandra, was considered to be the canon lead, with the official novel starring her as well.

So, will it be the same for Valhalla? Well, according to narrative director Darby McDevitt, the answer is ‘both.’ However, he couldn’t clarify how that will be the case as it would spoil the game.

Is it possible that both protagonists will appear in the story somehow? While we can only guess, this decision to make both characters official is likely to placate fans of both characters.

Romance options will be included again but, if they do, we already know there won’t be a repeat of last time where Odyssey, despite allowing players to romance whoever they wanted regardless of gender, ended by forcing them into a heterosexual relationship in order to have a baby.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia.
