Ashely Young promised he would be back among the fans again soon, watching his now former Manchester United teammates from the stands after completing his move to Inter Milan.

The 34-year-old joined United from Aston Villa back in 2011 and made over 250 appearances for the club, winning four major honours in that time.

Young had less than six months remaining on his current deal and with United showing no signs of offering him fresh terms, the versatile defender opted to join the Italian giants on an initial six-month deal.

‘To Man Utd, you gave me the chance to play with legends, to win trophies, to work under the greatest manager in history and to be your captain,’ he wrote on Twitter shortly after confirmation of his departure was broke.

‘Thank you for letting me be part of your story for eight and a half years.

‘To the United fans, every time I walked on the pitch wearing your shirt I gave you my all. Thank you for your support during the highs and the lows.

‘I leave as one of you, see you again in an away end soon.’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, meanwhile, has already confirmed that Harry Maguire will inherit the captaincy following Young’s departure.

‘Harry has been wearing the captain’s armband and he will keep wearing it,’ said Solskjaer ahead of Sunday’s visit to Anfield.

‘He’s come in and been a leader in the group. I’ve been impressed by his leadership skills.

‘Everything about him tells me he’s a leader. He’s part of a group that we’ve had that have been leading this young group.’
