My Kitchen Rules contestant Ash Keillah has tackled the waves and went for a surf in the middle of cyclone Oma at a beach in the Gold Coast.

On Saturday, the 34-year-old TV star, also known as ‘The friendly pirate,’ braved the high swell as he entered the water with a friend. 

Ash made sure he was well-stretched before heading into the ocean, performing a number of different yoga poses before hitting the sea.

Going shirtless, the adrenaline-junkie showed off his muscular frame, exposing his chest tattoos while catching waves in the ocean.

The bubbly reality star showed off his impressive surfing skills, and attracted a large number of the public who came to spectate his daredevil surfing session.

Ash got his nickname ‘The friendly pirate’ after losing his eye in a shock accident, and has worn a black eye patch ever since.

On an episode of My Kitchen Rules, the surfer revealed how he actually came to lose his eye. 

‘The patch has become part of my identity but it started from something sort of tragic,’ Ash explained.

‘Ten years ago I was at a party and two blokes started fighting.

‘It didn’t have anything to do with me, I was trying to stop it and the guy threw a glass and tried to get someone else and got me and it took my eye out.’

But while an incident like Ash experienced could have caused some people to hit rock bottom, the Byron Bay-based blonde was determined to look on the bright side of the challenging period.

‘It definitely changed me for the better. I wouldn’t change a thing,’ he insisted during the episode.

He added: ‘I’m happy I lost my eye.’
