To become a Mr Kipling master baker, you simply need to add two eggs, milk and oil.

Once baked, the cakes are big enough for 16 people, so it could be a perfect option for birthday parties.

The bake giant is also launching two 400g tubs of icing in vanilla buttercream and almond flavours.

All products have a recommended retail price (RRP) of £2.50, but shops are free to set their own prices.

The cakes are comparable with other similar mixes available at supermarkets.

For instance Betty Crocker cake mixes retail at £2.50 at Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Ocado.

The mixes come in a range of flavours including velvety vanilla, devil’s food chocolate, carrot, chocolate and rainbow chip party cake.

Likewise Cadbury cake mixes usually retail around the £2.50 mark.

But you can usually get supermarket-brand mixes more cheaply.

Asda’s own brand cake mixes retail at £1.75 and come in a huge range of flavours.

While Morrisons own-brand mixes are an absolute steal at just £1 each.

The icing is also reasonably priced compared to other similar products, with Betty Crocker icing usually retailing at £2.50 too.

Again, you’ll pay less if you switch to supermarket own brands – with Asda and Morrison’s own pre-made icing costing just £1.75.

Obviously if you make the cakes from scratch, they’ll generally be cheaper, but using a mix is often easier and you won’t have lots of leftover ingredients.

At the moment, the Mr Kipling cake mixes and icing are only available in Asda stores, and Mr Kipling hasn’t yet confirmed whether they’ll roll out online.

They’ll appear in other major supermarkets later this year, but the bake giant hasn’t clarified a date for this either.

If you’re keeping an eye on your waistline, you’ll want to know that every 33g serving of the icing contains 138-139 calories.

Every 37g serving of the baked cakes contain 136-138 calories.

And of course, they won’t be identical to the much loved bakery treats – instead you’ll be making cakes inspired by some of the retailers favourites.

For example a cherry bakewell flavoured cake, rather than individual bakewell tarts.

Ellie Ntougia at Premier Foods (Mr Kipling’s owner), said: “Our home baking ranges cater to people of all skills, providing quick and easy ways to either bake the products straight from the pack, or for more experienced bakers to use as a base for their own creations.”

In a new boozy twist B&M is selling a Battenburg Cake flavoured gin liqueur and it costs £10.

Meanwhile Asda and Morrisons are selling McVities unicorn cake bars complete with rainbow crystals.

And Iceland has gone retro – selling arctic rolls and Neapolitan wafers.

Asda now sells a giant Malteser cake – and you can smash it open to reveal more treats
