Asda and M&S’ dark and white chocolate eggs win blind Easter egg taste test

EASTER eggs by Asda and M&S have been crowned joint best to buy this year in a blind taste test, and surprisingly they come with dark and white chocolate.

Tasters praised the Asda version’s “melt-in-the-mouth chocolate and gooey vanilla truffles”, which is dairy and gluten free and costs £5 for 200g.

While tasters loved the “deeply creamy vanilla egg” at M&S at a cost of £12 for 500g.

White and dark chocolate isn’t for everyone, yet the eggs both scored 80/100 in a blind taste test by Good Housekeeping.

The third Easter egg sharing the top spot this year is another white chocolate version by The Chocolate Libertine, also getting a 80/100 score.

This costs a whopping £69.99 for 1.05kg though, so it’s not a suitable Easter treat for the average Brit.

If you’re craving an ordinary milk chocolate egg, the tasters crowned Sainsbury’s Cocoa et Co Belgian Chocolate Beehive Egg the winner in its category.

It costs £10 for 220g, and achieved a 75/100 score.

While the winners among kids’ treats were Easter eggs up for grabs at Tesco, Co-op and Hotel Chocolat, which all got 76/100 scores.

Tesco’s Doug the Dinosaur egg costs £3.50 for 200g, while you get less chocolate for your cash by nabbing Co-op’s 200g Golden Honeycomb Crunch Egg-splosion for £5.

Hotel Chocolat’s Pen Pal’s treat is the most expensive out of the lot, costing £10 for a smaller 120g.

Overall, Good Housekeeping tested 31 different eggs based on a shortlist of 105 across a variety of categories.

Alongside Easter Eggs, it also tested hot cross buns and Easter foods, including roast potatoes, chicken, legs of lamb, ready-made Yorkshire puddings as well as horseradish sauce, mint sauce and onion gravy.

M&S came out on top even here with the best hot cross buns and goose fat potatoes, lamb, onion gravy and Yorkshire puddings, according to the tasters.

Angela Trofymova, head of food testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute, said: “We’re delighted this year to not only test the best Easter sweet treats, but also to look at a favourite for a lot of families – the Easter lunch.

“The results this year were really interesting, from Asda winning best tasting egg for its gluten and dairy free to M&S clearly outshining all the other supermarkets when it comes to Easter lunch options.

“What’s important to us is that every item we taste test is completely blind and scored on merit – which is why we always have such a wide ranging and interesting set of results.”

Last year, Lindt’s £8 white chocolate Easter egg scooped the top spot in the Good Housekeeping blind taste test.

While Morrisons’ £10 prosecco was named the top fizz in October.

Easter Sunday falls on April 12 in 2020, but why does it change each year?
