ASAP Rocky would have preferred not to have recorded Mura Masa’s Love$ick in the infamous Abbey Road studios and instead wanted to work on the track in the star’s neighbourhood of Gurnsey. Because, why not?

The rapper dropped the revamped beat in 2016, following the initial instrumental track one year prior, with producer and artist Mura Masa aka Alex Crossan revealing how the whole thing came about.

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, Alex recalled: ‘When I worked with Rocky, I booked out a studio in Abbey Road to try and impress him. I would have been 20 at the time, new to the industry and very naive.

‘We hung out for a couple of hours and eventually, he said to me, “Why are we at Abbey Road? Do you live around here?” I was like, “I thought it would be cool to record in the room The Beatles recorded in”, and he was like, “Yeah, that is cool but next time I want to see the ends, I want to see where you live and sh**”.’

Talking about how Rocky landed up featuring on the song, Alex, who won a Grammy for best dance/electronic album in 2018, explained: ‘Originally, Love$ick was instrumental.

‘Somebody on my team had suggested it to me that we should think about getting a feature for it because it never really had its time in the sun, I guess. Like not very many people had heard it at that point.

‘There were lots of suggestions about who should be on it but I always wanted Rocky to be honest. We waited for ages and ages until it got to point he was able to do the track and he loved it.’

Alex, who’s set to play shows at London’s Alexandra Palace and O2 Victoria Wharehouse in Manchester next month, has collaborated with a number of artists across his five-year career, including the controversial rapper Slowthai, who recently spat in a fan’s mouth upon request.

‘The first time I worked with Slowthai he’d just been out all night and came to the session without sleeping,’ Alex said. ‘We did Doormen, which is a track on his album, within the first hour of meeting. It was literally just him improvising about the night out he’d just had.’

Iconic.
