As you stay safe indoors on lockdown, your skin will also reap the benefits

Make the most of the nation’s health lockdown and give your skin a much-needed breather.

That’s the advice from leading beauty experts this week as Brits isolate in their homes.

According to Dr Asher Siddiqi, no matter where we live, air pollution to some degree poses serious risks to our health.

New ongoing research reveals how airborne pollutants affect how your skin looks, feels and even how it ages.

So while you stay safe indoors, Dr Siddiqi, a medical aesthetic expert at Transform, suggests ditching the make-up and following his ultimate skincare tips.

CREAM UP

During this enforced isolation we may be spending most of our time inside but it’s still important to wear SPF – it’s a myth that sunscreen should only be worn when outside.

Many people come to see us with concerns about wrinkles and fine lines.

While these are brought on by the natural ageing process, they’re often accelerated due to sun exposure.

But being indoors a lot doesn’t mean you are protected from the sun, especially if you’re sitting by windows while working, because as the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate through.

Lockdown Tip

Use a minimum SPF of 30 or, better yet, SPF 50, daily. If you can’t get to the shop and have some left over from your last holiday, use that.

It’s better than nothing – SPF creams can remain effective for up to three years.

AVOID OVER-WASHING

Our skin is the first layer that comes into contact with the outside world, acting as a protective barrier from the environment.

Keeping it clean is important, but washing until you get that scrubbed feeling can strip the face of its natural oils, leaving it dry, sensitive and red.

This can lead to the skin overcompensating in oil production, blocking pores and triggering breakouts.

Use only tepid or cold water when washing your face.

Lockdown Tip

Use a cleanser that’s right for your skin type.

If you run out, combine milk with a few drops of lemon for a moisturising cleanser.

Mobile phone are a breeding ground for bacteria

CLEAN YOUR PHONE

Mobiles may look clean but they are extremely dirty.

They are a breeding ground for bacteria – and when you press your phone to the side of your face it can stimulate oil glands.

This might cause a blemish or infection in broken skin.

Lockdown Tip

Wipe your phone daily with an antibacterial wipe.

Coronavirus advice is to avoid touching your face as much as possible, so wearing headphones or going hands-free may help.

Don’t forget to regularly clean headsets and keyboards if working from home.

GO GENTLY

It’s important to exfoliate to remove dead cells, but over-doing it can cause damage to the skin barrier and allow bacteria in.

When exfoliating, don’t scrub too hard. Moisturise afterwards.

Lockdown Tip

There are lots of things in our pantries that can help your skin while shops are shut.

Try banana, honey, coconut oil, egg whites or oats on dry skin.

For oily skin, skip the banana and oil, and add a dollop of natural yogurt.
