Arsene Wenger offers advice to interim boss Freddie Ljungberg amid Arsenal struggles

Arsene Wenger believes Freddie Ljungberg could be the perfect man to turn around Arsenal’s miserable season.

Wenger, 70, won three Premier League titles, including in 2003-04 when his ‘Invincibles’ – with Ljungberg among that squad – went unbeaten for an entire season.

Wenger ultimately saw his 22-year reign come to an emotional conclusion at the end of the 2017/18 campaign, and was replaced by Spanish boss Unai Emery.

However Emery was sacked last week after a torrid season so far and has been replaced by interim boss Ljungberg, who has been tasked with reviving the Gunners’ season.

And Wenger is confident that his former star boasts all the credentials to make a success of this temporary role.

He said: “My heart is with the club and I want them to do well. Freddie is fantastically committed.

“He has an opportunity. Let’s get him to work with his ideas and support him.”

Wenger’s comments come after Ljungberg revealed his intention to tap into the knowledge of the Frenchman as he prepares for just his second game in charge of Arsenal .

The Gunners appointed Ljungberg as interim head coach on Friday after sacking Unai Emery – and the former Sweden international oversaw a 2-2 at Norwich on Sunday.

And ahead of Thursday’s Premier League visit of Brighton , Wenger should be expecting phone calls in the coming days as Ljungberg aims to garner as much wisdom as possible.

The 42-year-old said Wenger, who brought Ljungberg to Arsenal as a player back in 1998, could offer valuable experience as he looks to build his own career.

Asked if he had spoken to former Arsenal boss Wenger, he replied: “No (not yet).

“I would really like to speak to him. I’m in contact with him but I haven’t spoke to him because it’s been a bit hectic, but it’s on my list to do so.

“He was here for 22 years as the coach so he has a lot of experience. And he probably has some things that he thinks are important that he can share with me and make me a better coach. That’s what I wanted to ask.”
