Arsenal 'won't sign' Dani Ceballos permanently after he failed to impress Arteta

Arsenal reportedly won’t sign Dani Ceballos when his loan spell from Real Madrid ends – as the midfielder has not done enough to impress manager Mikel Arteta.

And Ceballos is open to joining another Premier League club, with the 23-year-old not keen to return to the Bernabeu as he is not believed to be part of Zinedine Zidane’s plans.

Ceballos scored the injury-time winner in Arsenal’s FA Cup victory over Sheffield United on Sunday, and the Gunners agreed a deal with Madrid to extend his loan to the end of the season.

But his future beyond that is uncertain, following a stop-start campaign since he was signed by Arteta’s predecessor Unai Emery as a replacement for Aaron Ramsey last summer.

After joining for a loan fee of £3.5million, the former Real Betis ace impressed early on but suffered a hamstring injury which ruled him out for two months.

Dani Ceballos has reportedly not made enough of an impression on Mikel Arteta to persuade Arsenal to pay £30m for him

But by the time he was ready return, Emery had been replaced by Arteta, and Ceballos struggled to win the new manager over.

He has returned to the starting lineup in recent weeks, but given the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, Arsenal are reluctant to pay the £30m that Madrid would want for him, according to The Sun.

Instead, the publication reports, Arteta would rather give more opportunities to homegrown rising stars Bukayo Saka, Joe Willock and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

That leaves Ceballos in limbo, as the player is convinced he will not get chances under Zidane at Madrid.

The Spain international, who cost Real Madrid £15m when they signed him from Real Betis in 2017, admitted: “Next year I want to play and I will hardly be able to do that at Real Madrid.

“I am not closing the door on any club and I do not rule out continuing with a team in the Premier League.”
