Arsenal weighing up bid for Chelsea star Jorginho as Thomas Partey transfer alternative

Arsenal are interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, according to reports. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen on strengthening his midfield options before the end of the summer transfer window and is heavily linked with moves for Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey and Lyon’s Houssem Aouar. But it now appears Italy international Jorginho is another player the Gunners are looking at.

Sky Sports News claim Jorginho is on the list of midfield targets for Arteta.

Jorginho has started Chelsea’s first two Premier League games of the season.

The 28-year-old captained Frank Lampard’s side on both occasions, scoring a penalty in the win over Brighton and missing from the spot in the 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool.

Jorginho was linked with a move away from Chelsea earlier this year before his former boss Maurizio Sarri was sacked by Juventus.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have been interested in signing Atletico star Partey throughout the summer window.

However, Atletico have not been willing to accept an offer lower than the Ghanaian’s £45million release clause.

Arsenal have also seen at least one offer for Frenchman Aouar turned down by Lyon.

Lyon reportedly want up to £54m for Aouar, who is a more attacking midfielder than Jorginho or Partey.

Arsenal have won their first two Premier League matches of the season and also overcame Leicester in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

The Gunners beat West Ham 2-1 thanks to a late Eddie Nketiah goal at the Emirates on Saturday.

After the match, Arteta insisted he was happy with the performances of midfield duo Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos.

However, he admitted he was open to adding in that area before the October 5 deadline.

“I think [Xhaka and Ceballos have] been really good since I joined the club,” Arteta said.

“Not only then but also this season, [Ceballos] deserved to play again today but I just wanted to rotate.

“I thought it was a game where we were going to attack the spaces and the way they defended, we wanted to create some situations with Dani there but if we can strengthen the team then we’re going to try and do that.

“Until the market is gone, everything is still open.

“Depending on what happens with some other players… as I say again, we are open to discussions, the market can surprise us.”
