Arsenal to send Konstantinos Mavropanos out on loan despite lack of defensive options

Arsenal are on the brink of sending Konstantinos Mavropanos out on loan to German side Nurnberg.

The out-of-favour defender is expected to leave this month after struggling to cement a spot in the Gunners first team.

Arteta is looking to bolster his defensive ranks after Calum Chambers suffered a long-term injury which has ruled him out for up to nine months.

But the new Gunners manager has seemingly decided that Mavropanos doesn’t feature in his plans this season and will send him out on loan.

The 22-year-old, who has made just nine appearances in three years since arriving from Greek side PAS Giannina, is believed to be attracting interest from Italy.

According to German publication Bild , Nurnberg have won the race to land the youngster ahead of Werder Bremen, Dusseldorf and Hanover.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta delivered a conclusive transfer message to Arsenal fans – suggesting no new signings will be completed this month.

“At the moment there is nothing coming up,” Arteta told talkSPORT, when asked if Arsenal are expecting to welcome new recruits this month.

“The club is working on a few things but you know how difficult this window is and I’m not expecting many things.”

This isn’t the first time Arteta has suggested this month could be a quiet one for Arsenal.

When recently asked if the Gunners board is planning to bankroll him this January, he responded: “I don’t know, I’m not expecting big things.

“I’m expecting big things from the players I have at the moment, the players that are recovering from injuries.

“That’s the biggest expectations from my side, they’re there.

“If we can find something to help us go through the season in a more balanced way in certain areas, and is helpful, we’ll look at the options.”
