Arsenal defensive target Dan-Axel Zagadou has asked to leave Borussia Dortmund, opening the door to a potential move to the Emirates this summer.

Gunners boss Unai Emery is in the market for a new centre-back as he looks to bolster a back-line that conceded 51 times in the Premier League last season – shipping over twice as many goals as Manchester City and Liverpool.

Zagadou has emerged as a potential solution and impressed Arsenal scouts at the recent Under-20 World Cup, where he captained his country.

Now Bild report that Zagadou wants out of Dortmund and is ready to push for a move, with the Frenchman fearing for his first-team chances following the return of Mats Hummels.

The 20-year-old, who can also cover at left-back, played 17 times in the Bundesliga last season but is likely to be backup behind a partnership of Hummels and Manuel Akanji in the 2019/20 campaign.

Zagadou’s agent has already begun searching for a new club and he is particularly interested in a move to the Premier League.

Dortmund signed the centre-back on a free transfer when he left PSG in 2017 and can expect a big profit, with the German side setting an asking price of €30million (£26.8m) for a player who still has three years left on his contract.

That could prove to be a stumbling block for Arsenal, who only have a transfer budget of around £45m to spend this summer after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Any funds made from player sales will be given to Emery to reinvest in the squad, though they have had no significant interest in the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and the Spanish coach wants a winger, two full-backs and a box-to-box midfielder in addition to a centre-back.
