Arsenal stars are “trying to get Unai Emery sacked” with poor performances.
That’s the opinion of former Gunners star Jermaine Pennant, who has called on the Arsenal players to take a “look at themselves and be more energetic.”
The north London club have failed to win in their last six matches, and a host of names have been linked with Emery’s job in recent weeks.
Emery is under intense pressure, with speculation the board is starting to lose patience with the Spanaird.
Pennant, who represented Arsenal from 1999 to 2005, emphasises with Emery, and believes the players are as much to blame as the Spaniard for the Gunners’ failings.
“The players have got to look at themselves because there is only so much that the manager can do,” Pennant told 888sport.
“He can give instructions and pick the team, but he can’t pass the ball for you. And some of the goals they are conceding is not due to the manager. That comes down to application.
“That comes down to knowing how to defend properly.
“It’s the fundamentals like seeing the correct pass and knowing where to be and where not to be. That’s down to the players.
“They need to look at themselves and be more energetic. Defend like every game is a cup final. Instead they’re half-hearted like they’re trying to get Emery sacked.”
Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo has emerged as a leading contender to replace Emery, should he get the sack.
Santo was asked to comment on the speculation linking him to north London on Wednesday, but poured cool water on the claims.
Santo said: “You know me well enough. You know I’m not going to answer about that and mention an issue that is not a reality.
“We’re doing OK. There is a lot of room to improve as a group as a team. This is what we want to do, all together.”
